HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – Eliot Goldthorp and Ryan Carmichael each scored second half goals as the Hofstra University men posted a 2-0 non-conference victory over UMBC Tuesday night at Hofstra Soccer Stadium.

Goldthorp also added an assist in a three-point performance for the junior All-American.

The Pride, which is ranked first in the United Soccer Coaches Atlantic Region poll, moved to 4-1-1. UMBC, ranked third in the Northeast Region, suffered its first loss of the season, falling to 3-1-1.

Goldthorp notched his first goal of the season in the 54th minute, taking a pass from Roc Carles on the left side before dribbling just outside the 18-yard box and unleashing a right-footed blast that found the top right corner for the 1-0 lead.

Carmichael doubled the Hofstra advantage seven minutes later when he was the beneficiary of a solid defensive play by Albert Kang and Goldthorp. Deep in the UMBC end, Kang and Goldthorp forced a turnover with the latter ultimately sliding a pass to Carmichael, who easily converted for his fourth goal of the season and third in the last four games.

Goalkeeper Wessel Speel had three big first-half saves to notch the shutout as the entire Hofstra defense clamped down on the Retrievers, limiting them to six shots (five in the first half).

Hofstra returns to action Saturday at 2 p.m. when the Pride travels to Campbell in South Carolina.
