Flower City Union might be in only its second season, but the team knows what has come before it.

On Sept. 30, the National Independent Soccer Association club plans to hold a Rochester Soccer History Night at the Rochester Downtown Sports Complex in Rochester, N.Y. Flower City is scheduled to play Savannah Clovers FC at 6 p.m. that Saturday night.

Flower City Union will honor and remember several teams from the city’s past, including the Rochester Lancers, Rochester Flash, Rochester Rhinos and Western New York Flash.

Soccer is a Kick in the Grass mentioned the special night on its Monday night radio show.

Flower City Union minority owner Mark Washo, a guest on the show, confirmed that the team is planning such an event.

“We haven’t announced it 100 percent all the way, but we have been sending out save the date,” he told co-hosts Andrew Battisti and Joe Sirianni. “We’re going to try to do our best to reach out to as many former players and coaches and front office people that were connected to the club. Really just to pay tribute to those who have played here.”

Washo said that there might be a mini-game for the former players at halftime, for those who “still want to maybe go out and have some fun for 15 minutes.”

There also might be a dinner a night prior to the game, he added.

“We’re just starting to put all the information out and invite people,” Washo said. “So far, the responses have been strong. We’ll be making more announcements soon.

“There’s so much history here. It’s part of the fabric of this community. We just want to pay tribute and showcase the history and have a fun night.”
