After a 15-year absence from the English Football League, Wrexham AFC is back with the bigger boys as the team secured promotion behind a 3-1 win over Boreham Wood in Wrexham, Wales on Saturday.

With actors and team owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney watching along with a capacity crowd at Racecourse Ground, Wrexham won the National League title with one game to spare.

Wrexham will play in League Two next season, the fourth tier of England’s professional soccer system. The team has recorded 110 points, four more than second place Notts County, whom Wrexham recently defeated, 3-2.

Striker Paul Mullin struck twice in the second half.

When the final whistle sounded, Reynolds reportedly looked overcome with emotion, while thousands of fans ran on to the pitch with red flares being set off, to celebrate the triumph. Wrexham had been relegated to the National League in 2008.

Boreham Wood made the hosts sweat, scoring in the opening minute, but an Elliot Lee equalizer in the 15th minute.

Mullin, who has 38 league goals of the club’s 115 scores, scored twice in the second half as his 71st-minute tally gave Wrexham a 3-1 advantage.

In November 2020, Reynolds, who stars in Deadpool, and It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia actor McElhenney bought the club and turned their quest to return the team to the EFL into a television show.

The TV show has been a hit.

But then again Wrexham has been a bigger hit.
