The demise of Rochester New York FC turned out to be good news for one team.

The Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC are through to the third round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, in the wake of Friday’s announcement that RNYFC will not take part in the MLS NEXT Pro season, U.S. Soccer announced on Monday.

MLS NEXT Pro announced that the club, formerly known as the Rochester Rhinos and which won the Open Cup in 1990, had decided to cease operations.

The Pittsburgh USL Championship club, which was drawn to play Rochester NY FC in the second round on April 5 at Highmark Stadium, will be recorded 1-0 winners via forfeit.

The matter will be referred to the Open Cup Adjudication & Discipline Panel per U.S. Soccer policy.

The game would have pit Riverhounds head coach Bob Lilley against his former team.

Pittsburgh’s opponent in the third round is not yet known. It will be determined, along with all of the other third-round matches, via the official draw on Thursday, April 6.
