Alex Morgan, who led the National Women’s Soccer League in scoring last season and helped the U.S. women’s national team win the 2022 Concacaf W Championship, finished second in the voting for The Best FIFA Women’s Player for 2022 on Monday.

Ceremonies were held in Paris, France.

Morgan, who plays for the San Diego Wave, also was named to the 2022 FIFA FIFPro Women’s World11. This was Morgan’s fifth time being named to the list (2022, 2021, 2019, 2017 and 2016).

Spain attacker Alexia Putellas won The Best FIFA Women’s Player for the second year in a row. England star forward Beth Mead finished third.

Morgan’s first action with the USWNT in 2022 came in June’s preparation for the Concacaf W Championship. She ended up playing a key role in the tournament while helping the USA qualify for the 2023 Women’s World Cup and the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Her two goals againsts Haiti to open the CWC were crucial in kickstarting the USA’s qualifying campaign. She also scored the game-winner in the championship match, converting a clutch penalty kick for the USA’s 1-0 win over Canada.

Morgan added another goal against Nigeria later in the year and finished 2022 with four goals and one assist, with the assist coming against Germany at the end of the year. In the USA’s final match of the year, a 2-1 win vs. Germany on Nov. 13, she earned her 200th cap, becoming just the 13th player in U.S. history to reach that milestone.

Morgan’s goal against Brazil on Feb. 22 to help clinch the title at the 2023 SheBelieves Cup was the 121st of her career and gave her 14 as a mom, giving her the record most goals scored as a mom in USWNT history.

In 2022, Morgan put together the best professional season of her club career for the expansion side San Diego Wave FC. The 33-year-old scored a career-high 15 regular season goals to win the NWSL Golden Boot, and she was named to the NWSL Best XI First Team. Morgan played in 19 matches for the Wave, starting 18, and played 1,647 minutes. She also had three assists and was an NWSL MVP finalist while helping the Wave to a third-place finish in the regular season standings in their first year of existence.

Morgan finished second in the voting for the FIFA Women’s Player of the Year in 2019 behind teammate Megan Rapinoe.

Coming off leading Argentina to the title at the 2022 World Cup, Lionel Messi won The Best FIFA Men’s Player of the Year award.

Argentina’s Emiliano Martínez won The Best FIFA Men’s Goalkeeper of the year award and England’s Mary Earps won The Best Women’s Goalkeeper of the Year award. Argentina’s World Cup champion Lionel Scaloni was voted FIFA Best Coach for Men’s Soccer while Sarina Weigman, who led England to the title at the 2022 UEFA Women’s Euros, was voted FIFA Best Coach for Women’s Soccer.
