Ratings for the U.S. men’s national team’s World Cup opening game on FOX on Monday afternoon drew more than eight million viewers, the network said Tuesday night.

A total of 8,306,000 viewers watched the USA’s 1-1 draw with Wales.

The match peaked at 9,434,000 between 3:45-4 p.m. ET, when the Americans were trying to defend a 1-0 lead before Gareth Bale converted a late penalty kick.

The top markets were Austin (5.8/24), Cincinnati (5.4/21), Dallas (4.9/22), San Diego (4.9/22) and Philadelphia (4.6/17).

The USA match certainly helped FOX’s average number of viewers for three Monday games. The average was 4,0026,00, which was a 193-percent increase over the opening three contests at the 2018 World Cup in Russia (1,374,000).

The Americans meet England on Black Friday, Nov. 25 (FOX, 2 p.m. ET).
