Erika Harwood scored a second-half goal as fifth-seeded and 18th-ranked Georgetown University posted a 1-0 victory over Hofstra University in the first round of the NCAA Division I Championship at Shaw Field Saturday.

Hofstra, which is 0-2-1 against Georgetown, saw its season end at 10-8-4. The Hoyas (15-1-5), who extended their unbeaten streak to 18 games, advanced to the second round against either Pittsburgh or Buffalo.

The teams played a scoreless first half that was not without chances for the Hoyas. The home team had eight shots with four on goal. Hofstra did not have a shot on target, but did generate several chances that the Hoya defense thwarted.

The teams played another 15 minutes of scoreless action in the second half before the Hoyas broke through. Natalie Means sent in a cross from the right side and found Harwood unmarked just outside the six-yard box and she sent a shot into the left side of the goal.

Hofstra had a chance with just over a minute left with a free kick from the left side of the box, but the service in was knocked away by the Georgetown defense.

Hofstra goalkeeper Skylar Kuzmich finished with four saves, while Georgetown’s Allie Augur did not face a shot on goal.

Georgetown enjoyed a 17-1 shot advantage.
