In its fourth season in the professional ranks and first postseason appearance, South Georgia Tormenta FC captured the USL League One final, defeating Chattanooga Red Wolves SC, 2-1, at Tormenta Stadium in Statesboro, Ga. on Sunday night.
Kazaiah Sterling scored the game-winner that snapped a 1-1 tie in the 82nd minute.
A relatively even match saw the two sides split possession at 50 percent apiece and total shots at 10-9 in favor of Tormenta FC.
Sterling founded the net in the 35th minute with a penalty-kick conversion for the hosts after Mukwelle Akale was taken down in the box by Moe Espinoza.
Three minutes into first-half stoppage time, the Red Wolves equalized. José Carrera-Garcia lobbed in a free kick that Alex Tejera headed home to knot it up at 1-1.
With 10 minutes remaining, Tormenta FC goalkeeper TJ Bush was forced out with an injury and veteran keep Ibis Pablo Jara took his spot. That emotional momentum swing saw Kazaiah Sterling slip a ball to the feet of a streaking Jamil Roberts on the far side of the pitch two minutes later who was able to power it past goalkeeper Carlos Avilez for the game-winner.
Sterling scored his 18th goal and recorded his fifth assist of the season across all competitions to wrap up a his memorable first season with Tormenta.
