The St. John’s University men saw their 2022 campaign come to a close with a 5-1 Big East loss to Marquette University at Valley Fields in Milwaukee, Wis. on Wednesday night.

The Red Storm (4-8-5, 2-4-4), who played with 10 men for most of the match due to a red card, entered the match still in contention for a Big East Tournament berth, but was unable to secure the three points it needed to clinch a postseason spot.

Wesley Leggett scored the lone goal for the Red Storm, his fourth of the season, on a penalty kick in the 90th minute.

The Golden Eagles (5-9-4, 1-5-4) took the lead in the seventh minute. On a free kick just outside the right edge of the penalty area, Beto Soto sent in a left-footed in-swinger into the upper 90 on the left side.

The hosts added to their lead in the 34th minute, as a Lukas Sunesson converted on a penalty kick.

After the ensuing kickoff, Nigel Griffith attempted to play a high ball with his right foot, which caught the head of a diving Marquette player and resulted in Griffith being shown a red card.

Marquette added three more goals between the 72nd and 87th minutes.
