After a 1-1 draw , the St. John’s University women prevailed in the penalty kick shootout over the University of Connecticut, 4-2, to advance to the semifinal of BIG EAST Championship at Belson Stadium on Sunday afternoon in Queens, N.Y.

The Johnnies scored on four of their five opportunities as Jessica Garziano, Molly Feighan and Couzis converted from the spot before Michelle Money scored the decisive penalty to seal the victory.

Isabelle Aviza scored the game-tying goal in regulation, her third of the season, on her only shot attempt. Ava Collins recorded her second assist.

Goalkeeper Gina Muzi, who made two vital saves in the shootout, started her 18th game, logging two saves in 110 minutes.

Seven minutes into the second half, the Huskies scored. Laci Lewis lofted a pass for Chioma Okafor on the right side of the box. Okafor headed the past Muzi.

The Johnnies responded in the 69th minute. Off a corner kick, the ball deflected off several bodies in the box before it found the head of Collins, who passed to Aviza. The senior forward used her right boot to fire the ball off the crossbar and into the net.

St. John’s takes on No. 2 seed Xavier University in the semifinal in Boyds, Md. on Thursday at 4 p.m.
