It was an uphill battle for the Fordham University women on Sunday, as they needed a win and help to qualify for the Atlantic 10 Championship. The Rams were able to accomplish the first part, scoring in the 88th minute to record a 1-0 win over the University of Massachusetts at Rudd Field in Amherst, Mass.

The Rams (5-11-1, 4-5-1) picked up some help with La Salle falling to Davidson College. Loyola Chicago held on for a 1-0 win at the University Richmond to match Fordham at 13 points in the standings with the tiebreaker going to the Ramblers.

After 87 minutes, Fordham earned a corner kick after Kristen Cocozza’s shot deflected off a UMass defender and over the endline. Caroline Monahan took the corner kick, finding Maura Murphy for the header goal inside the near post for her second goal of the season.

Fordham goalkeeper Kyla King made five saves to record her first career shutout.

The win was a milestone victory for first-year head coach Magnus Nilerud, as it was his 300th career coaching triumph. (295 at Bridgeport, five at Fordham).
