Hofstra University senior defender Anja Suttner Monday named the Colonial Athletic Association women’s soccer defensive player of the week.
She was honored for her efforts in Hofstra’s 2-0 week that kept the Pride in the hunt for a CAA Championship berth.
Suttner, a native of Bodenkirchen, Germany, played a key role on both sides of the ball. She anchored a defense that limited UNCW and the College of Charleston to six shots in each game. Suttner also came up with a huge defensive play in the final two minutes of the win over Charleston as she blocked a shot at an empty net following a pileup in front of the goal. That play prevented the Cougars from tying the game.
On the offensive end, Suttner scoredthe game-winning goal in the 2-1 victory over Charleston as her free kick score put the Pride up, 2-0, in the first half.
A two-time CAA defensive player of the Year, Suttner has led a defense that allows just over one goal per game (18 in 17 games). She has scored four goals this season.
Hofstra hosts Stony Brook University in its final home game of the regular season on Sunday at 1 p.m.
