Krista Agostinello and Anja Suttner scored first-half goals and the Hofstra University women held on for a 2-1 Colonial Athletic Association victory over College of Charleston at Hofstra Soccer Stadium in Hempstead, N.Y. on Sunday afternoon.
The victory boosted Hofstra (8-6-3, 3-3-2) into seventh place in the CAA standings with one game remaining in the regular season. The top eight teams advance to the CAA Championship. Charleston slipped to 8-7-2 and 2-4-2.
Agostinello got the Pride on the board at 9:53 when she took a pass from Olivia Pearce just over the midfield line and raced in uncontested for her third goal of the season. The play started with a pass from goalkeeper Skylar Kuzmich, who was credited with a second assist.
Suttner scored on a free kick at 14:29 to put the Pride up, 2-0, her fourth goal of the campaign.
The Cougars got a goal in the second half when Delaney Dawes converted a cross from Mary Alexander at 63:35. The visitors had another good scoring chance in the final two minutes on a free kick. Kuzmich went to the ground and the ball ended up on the foot of Dawes on the left side. Her shot at the empty net was blocked away by Suttner. Hofstra cleared the rebound.
Charleston keeper Savannah Barron made nine saves. Kuzmich had one save for the Pride. Hofstra held a 28-6 advantage in shots and a 12-3 edge in shots on goal.
Hofstra hosts Stony Brook University on Senior Day next Sunday at 1 p.m. The Seawolves are one point ahead of Hofstra in the standings.
