Isabelle Aviza scored the game-winner for the second consecutive match to lift the St. John’s University women to a 1-0 Big East victory over Seton Hall University at Belson Stadium in Queens, N.Y. on Thursday night.
On Sunday, Aviza tallied the lone goal in a 1-0 home triumph over the University of Connecticut.
In Thursday’s scoring sequence Ava Collins sent a header toward the goal, but a save by goalkeeper Grace Gordon forced a St. John’s corner kick. Jessica Garziano took the corner and found Nicole Gordon in the penalty area as she sent a header to Aviza. The Medway, Mass., native powered the ball past the keeper for the goal.
The goal was the forward’s second tally of the season and eighth of her career. The assists were Gordon and Garziano’s second and fourth of the season, respectively.
Goalkeeper Gina Muzi made one save en route to her fifth shutout of the campaign for the Red Storm (5-3-3, 2-1-0). Gordon produced six saves for Seton Hall (4-5-2, 0-3-0).
Muzi made her only stop of the game when Maille McDermott sent a blast towards the bottom of the net. It was the lone shot for Seton Hall as the Red Storm pelted the Pirate net with nine shots in the opening half.
St. John’s will hit the road for a Big East battle at Villanova University on Sunday at 2 p.m.
