Isabelle Aviza scored her first goal of the season to lift the St. John’s University women over the University of Connecticut, 1-0, in their Big East home opener at Belson Stadium in Queens, N.Y. on Sunday afternoon.

The Medway, Mass. native powered the ball by a diving Adyson Duran in the 14th minute. It was the sixth goal of her career with the Red Storm (4-3-3, 1-1).

Goalkeeper Gina Muzi recorded three saves as she improved to 4-3-2 and the Red Storm registered its fourth clean sheet of the season. Duran, who made two saves for UConn (5-3-1, 1-1-0).

On Aviza’s goal, Melina Couzis found the senior at the top of the box and the forward blasted a shot into the bottom right corner of the net.

Desperate for an equalizer with time running out, UConn pelted the Johnnie defense with two shots in the 82nd minute. Katherine Turner blocked the Huskies first attempt while Muzi stretched to stop the rebound. The attempts were the final shots of the match.

St. John’s returns to Belson Stadium for a match against Seton Hall University on Thursday at 7 p.m.
