Midfielder Eliot Goldthorp had a goal and an assist and Ryan Carmichael added a goal as the Hofstra University men earned up a 2-1 Colonial Athletic Association victory over Northeastern University Saturday night before a capacity crowd of 1,600 at Hofstra Soccer Stadium in Hempstead, N.Y.
The win was Hofstra’s third in a row and was the results of a strong defensive effort that allowed one shot on goal.
Carmichael put Hofstra (4-2, 2-1) on the board just under 10 minutes into the game as he took a long cross from Oliver Svalander and sent a right-footed shot over the shoulder of goalkeeper Colby Hegarty. Goldthorp also picked up an assist as his pass sent Svalander streaking down the sideline.
Goldthorp, who has a point in three consecutive games, added a goal when he converted a penalty kick in the 58th minute for a 2-0 lead. Carmichael drew the call when he was taken down by a defender in the 18-yard box. \
About 12 minutes later the Huskies were awarded a penalty kick of their own and Ole Kjorholt converted it to convert to cut deficit in half.
The Hofstra defense, however, clamped down even more and did not allow a scoring chance the rest of the way.
Hofstra honored the 2021 CAA Championship team in a pregame ceremony and celebrated alumni night. The Pride also recognized the 1997 team on its 25th anniversary season.
Hofstra will return to action Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Binghamton University.
