The first and second shots have been fired prior to the Hudson River Derby.

Last week Red Bulls head coach Gerhard Struber was quoted that he guaranteed a win against New York City FC this Saturday.

Not surprisingly, that did not go down very well with the team, which captured the Campeones Cup behind a 2-0 victory at Yankee Stadium on Wednesday night.

I think anytime that someone else says that it makes you think it’s a little bit disrespectful,” midfielder Andres Jasson said. “I think especially coming into Yankee Stadium, we will have our fans behind us and we will make it really tough for them.”

The two have met twice in the HRD this year. The Red Bulls won in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup quarterfinals at home, 3-0, on June 22 but the Cityzens exacted a measure of revenge, a 1-0 result at RBA on July 17.

“I wish soccer was so simple. He is obviously confident,” NYCFC head coach Nick Cushing said of Struber. “I expect it and I expect it because last game was arguably the greatest ever performance of an NYCFC team against a Red Bull team. I think when you lose a derby it is hard, I think for him when he lost, the [Red Bulls] way that he lost, I think that is difficult.

They will have incredible motivation to make sure that we do not play the football that we play in their home and win the way that we won. One thing I will say is tonight was a perfect warm-up game for Red Bull due to the direct balls and smashing it from back to front and getting after it.”

Midfielder Santiago Rodriguez hoped that the win will boost NYCFC out of its recent MLS doldrums. The Cityzens are enduring a five-match winless streak (0-4-1) in the league.

“We are extremely happy about tonight’s victory,” midfielder Santiago Rodriguez said. “Winning the cup is so important to us, especially coming off a bad run of games, which had a bunch of losses and draws. Hopefully this motivates us to make things right in the upcoming matches. Now comes the match against the Red Bulls, which we have to get the result to bring joy to the fans, who always are supporting us.”
