Nathan Simes snapped a tie in the 88th minute to lift the Fordham University men to a 2-1 victory over LIU at LIU Soccer Park in Brookville, N.Y. on Friday.

In a series that dates back to 1952, it was Fordham’s first victory over LIU since 2000.

On the game-winning goal sequence, Timo Hummrich made a run toward the box, slipping a through ball to Simes at the six-yard box. Simes chipped the ball past the goalkeeper for his first goal of the season.

Fordham opened the scoring in the 26th minute. Simes had the ball near the LIU end line and cut across into the box. He put a cross toward the front of the net, which Timo Hummrich knocked into the net for his first goal as a Ram.

In the 49th minute, LIU’s Emil Jaaskelainen picked up his second card of the game, leaving the Sharks down a player for the remainder of the contest.

But LIU then caught a break in the 53rd minute, as a handball was called in the box, awarding the hosts penalty kick. Michael Mollica connected inside the left post to knot the score at 1-1.

Fordham hosts Manhattan College at Jack Coffey Field on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
