There are three good reasons why the Hofstra University men were ranked 17th in the United Soccer Coaches preseason poll.

Three players – Hendrik Hebbeker, Ryan Carmichael, and Wessel Speel – have been named to the 2022 MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List it was announced by the United Soccer Coaches Thursday.

A total of 38 players made the list.

The Hermann Trophy, presented annually by the Missouri Athletic Club, is the nation’s highest individual honor recognizing the national player of the year as determined by the voting of Division I coaches who are members of United Soccer Coaches.

Hebbeker, a semifinalist for the Hermann Trophy last season, is coming off a breakout 2021 that saw him earn second-team All-America accolades and be named a first-team All-Colonial Athletic Association and all-region selection. The 2022 CAA Preseason Player of the Year, Hebbeker, a fifth-year senior, tallied nine goals and 11 assists last season.

Carmichael, who was named to the preseason All-CAA team, led the nation in scoring in 2021 with 39 points on 15 goals and nine assists. The junior was also a first-team all-region and All-CAA selection last season.

Speel, a junior, was a preseason All-CAA pick, after recording 72 saves, a 0.90 goals against average, and eight solo shutouts last season. His play garnered him First-Team All-CAA and all-region honors as well.

The Hofstra trio are the only CAA men’s soccer student-athletes to be named to the watch list.

The women’s Hermann Trophy Watch List was announced on Aug. 18. Fifteen men’s players and 15 women’s players become Hermann Trophy semifinalists on Nov. 30 following completion of Division I All-America voting following the fall season. Then on Dec. 7, the top three players from a final round of voting are the 2022 finalists. The 2022 winner is revealed on Jan. 6, 2023, at a ceremony at the historic Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis, Mo.
