Three Hofstra University men’s players – forward Ryan Carmichael, midfielder Hendrik Hebbeker and goalkeeper Wessel Speel – have been named preseason players to watch by the United Soccer Coaches.

Carmichael, who was named to the Colonial Athletic Association preseason team earlier this week, led the nation in scoring in 2021 with 39 points on 15 goals and nine assists. The junior was also a first-team all-region and All-CAA selection last season.

The CAA rpeseason player of the year, Hebbeker is coming off a breakout 2021 season that saw him earn second-team All-America accolades and be named a semifinalist for the MAC Hermann Trophy. The fifth-year senior was a first-team All-CAA and all-region selection in 2021, and tallied nine goals and 11 assists.

Speel, a junior, was a preseason All-CAA pick, after recording 72 saves, a 0.90 goals-against average, and eight solo shutouts last season. His play garnered him first-team All-CAA and all-region honors as well.

Hofstra, ranked 17th in the nation in the United Soccer Coaches Preseason Poll, was a unanimous selection to repeat as CAA Champions this year.

The Pride’s 2022 season gets underway August 25 at 7 p.m. vs. Fordham University.
