Former New York Cosmos defender and captain Werner Roth Monday was named as a Major Arena Soccer League advisor by commissioner Keith Tozer.
Roth has been assisting the league in an unofficial capacity since the beginning of this season.
A former Cosmos teammate of MASL chairman Shep Messing, Roth brings years of experience and knowledge to his new role. One of his first roles will be serving as a member of the new MASL player health and safety committee. The committee will focus on enhancing concussion protocols, medical standards, injury prevention, player safety, and playing field and arena conditions.
Roth also will assist the office of the commissioner on several projects in North America and internationally.
“We are pleased to bring someone of Werner’s reputation and experience to the MASL,” Tozer said in a statement. “He will serve as a valuable asset to the office of the commissioner as we continue to strive toward greater exposure and sustainability.”
Roth played for the Cosmos from 1972-79 and was a member of three North American Soccer League championship teams (1972, 1978, 1979). He captained the Cosmos and the U.S. men’s national team, for which he played 15 times.
He was inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame in 1989.
