NJ/NY Gotham FC announced Thursday that Nigerian international forward Ifeoma Onumonu had signed a one-year contract for the 2022 National Women’s Soccer League season.
Onumonu, 27, will return for her sixth season in the NWSL after recording eight goals and four assists over 22 starts and 25 appearances.
“I’m really excited to re-sign with Gotham FC,” Onumonu said in a statement. “From the beginning, this organization has been really good to me and I’m looking forward to fighting for a championship this upcoming season with the excellent group that we have. Can’t wait to get it started!!”
Last June, Onumonu was called into the Nigeria women’s national team training camp prior three international friendlies that were a part of U.S. Soccer’s Summer Series. That was Onumonu’s first call-up after appearing for her country Under-23 side.
Onumonu was drafted eighth overall by the Boston Breakers out of the University of California-Berkeley in the 2017 NWSL draft. She was traded to Gotham FC (then Sky Blue FC) from OL Reign in January 2020.
“Ify is everything you want in a nine in this league,” head coach Scott Parkinson said in a statement. “Across goals and assists, she was one of the most productive players in the league. To have her lead our front line for years to come is great news to everyone here at Gotham FC.”
