DURHAM, N.C. – The St. John’s University women saw its season come to an end with a 7-1 loss to top-seeded Duke University in the Round of 16 of the NCAA Division I tournament on Sunday night.

Maia Cabrera, the Rego Park, N.Y. native scored the Johnnies’ lone goal. It was Cabrera’s third of the season and the sixth of her career. Jessica Garziano picked up her 10th assist for the Red Storm (13-7-3).

The Blue Devils’ (16-3-1) Michelle Cooper fired off a pair of early shots before breaking though on her third attempt in the fourth minute to give Duke a 1-0 advantage.

The hosts continued to control the offensive momentum over the remainder of the half. Tess Boade and Cooper contributed goals in the 26th and 28th minutes, respectively, to take a 3-0 halftime lead.

Cabrera broke through on the Red Storm’s first attempt in the 47th minute. Garziano’s corner kick found Cabrera in the box. Cabrera headed the ball past the goalkeeper to cut the deficit to 3-1.

Duke grew its lead to 5-1 with a little over 20 minutes remaining as Mackenzie Pluck and Olivia Migli scored.

With nine minutes left, the Blue Devils recorded back-to-back goals from Migli and Grace Watkins.
