COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The LIU men will take on 10th-seeded Saint Louis in the second round of the NCAA Division I tournament Sunday at 3 p.m. (ESPN+).
The Sharks reached the next round with a 1-0 victory over the University of Maryland on Thursday night.
It was the first NCAA tournament win LIU (12-4-4) since 1982, and the program’s 13th overall.
Sophomore Assane Ben Fall scored with 77 seconds remaining in regulation. Fall broke away on the left side of the field, one-touched it back to catch his defender off guard, and launched a shot from outside the top left corner of the box that landed in the right corner of the net.
LIU didn’t register any solid shots in the first half, while Maryland got five off.
In the second half, the Sharks put the pressure on their Big Ten opponents. Sophomore forward Emil Jaaskelainen had a great opportunity in the 58th minute, forcing the goalkeeper to make a save. Jaaskelainen hit rebound over the top crossbar.
Fall also had a shot in the final five minutes that hit the side of the net.
Maryland also had some very strong chances in the last 10 minutes of the game, including a corner kick, a shot that just went wide, and then in the final three minutes, an open shot in front of the net. Skoumbakis made a vital save, his fifth.
