HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – The Hofstra University men’s soccer team will host Lipscomb University in the NCAA Division I first round Thursday at 7 p.m. at Hofstra Soccer Stadium.

The Pride (16-1-2, 5-1-2) earned the Colonial Athletic Association’s automatic bid to the tournament on Sunday, as the top-seeded Pride defeated third-seeded Elon University, 3-2, to earn the league championship for the fifth time and the first since 2015. CAA Championship most outstanding player Matthew Vowinkel scored two goals and Stefan Mason added on as the Pride rallied from a 1-0 halftime deficit with three consecutive second-half goals. Hofstra’s 16th victory is a school record, topping the 15 set by the 1968 team, which was the first team in program history to earn an NCAA Tournament bid.

Hofstra is ranked 13th in the latest United Soccer Coaches poll and is 10th in the NCAA RPI. In addition, the Pride’s 16 victories are tied for second in the nation and their .895 winning percentage is tied for third.

The Pride also qualified for the NCAA’s in 1968, 2004, 2005, and 2006. The Pride has a 3-5 record in NCAA Tournament competition and have advanced to the second round three times (2004, 2006, 2015). Hofstra will host an NCAA Tournament game for the fourth time in program history and is 2-1 all-time at homein NCAA Championship play. Hofstra defeated Lehigh, 2-1, in extratime in its last NCAA first round home game in 2015.

Lipscomb, the top seed, won the Atlantic Sun Conference title with a 4-1 victory over second-seeded Central Arkansas this past Saturday. The Bisons enter the NCAA Championship with a record of 12-3-2 and are riding a six-match win streak. This will be Lipscomb’s third NCAA appearance and its first since 2018.

The winner of the first round matchup between Hofstra and Lipscomb will advance to the second round and play at the No. 12 seed Penn State University on Sunday.
