TACOMA, Wash. – The Washington Spirit upset OL Reign via a 2-1 win in the semifinal of the NWSL Playoffs on Sunday.
The Spirit advanced to the NWSL final for the first time since 2016.
The hosts grabbed the third minute. Eugenie Le Sommer scored off a cross from Megan Rapinoe.
The Spirit backline showed unusual nerves early against the attack of OL Reign as the visitors found themselves on their heels as they neutralized OL Reign’s attack when. In the 12th minute, Trinity Rodman tied the game off a perfectly placed lob from Sam Staab.
In the 68th minute, Ashley Sanchez flicked the ball off the side of her right foot and to the back post past goalkeeper Sarah Bouhaddi.
