QUEENS, N.Y. – After helping the St. John’s University women team to a pair of shutout victories last week, Zsani Kajan and Shannon Aviza have been recognized by the Big East for their efforts.
Kajan Monday was named the league’s offensive player of the week while Aviza was selected to the conference’s Weekly Honor Roll.
Kajan, the conference’s leading scorer, has earned a spot as the league’s top player of the week after recording her second hat-trick of the season and the fourth of her Red Storm career on Sunday evening at Creighton University. She leads the nation with 15 goals on season.
Following a four-hour weather delay in Omaha, Neb., Kajan was quick to find the back of the net, She converted on a goal in the fifth minute. Twelve minutes later, the Budapest, Hungary native struck again before completing the hat-trick in the 78th minute.
Kajan has tied Adriana Viola for the fourth most goals in a season for the Red Storm. She has 43 goals to take over sole possession of second place on the program’s all-time scoring list.
The graduate student totaled 10 shots in the 2-0-0 week.
Aviza, a graduate student from Medway, Mass., led the Red Storm defense to a pair of shutout victories last week. The 5-9 defender and the rest of the St. John’s backline limited opponents to just four shots on goal last week as the Red Storm outshot Seton Hall and Creighton by a 27-12 margin, including 14-4 on target.
With the win, St. John’s clinched a Big East Championship berth, while also giving the Red Storm the potential of hosting a first round game.
Kajan, Aviza and the rest of the Red Storm squad will return to action Thursday at 7 p.m. when the team welcomes Villanova University to Belson Stadium.
