ELON, N.C. – The No. 25 Hofstra University women could not hold onto a one-goal lead as Elon scored twice late in the match, including in extratime en route to a 2-1 defeat Sunday afternoon.
Carson Jones finished off a set piece served in by Jessica Carrieri near midfield in the 107th minute.
The Pride fell to 13-3-1 overall and 5-2-0 in the Colonial Athletic Association, while Elon improved to 8-5-2 and 3-2-2 in the league.
Hofstra controlled the pace for nearly the entire match, outshooting the hosts, 15-5. Elon put only two shots on goal for over 107 minutes of play, but found the back of the net on both occasions.
In the 55th minute, Elon committed a hand ball inside the box, allowing fifth-year midfielder Lucy Porter to convert a penalty kick to the top left corner of the net, putting Hofstra up ,1-0. Elon tallied the equalizer on its first chance as Lydia Totten found the back of the net with just over 11 minutes remaining in regulation.
Hofstra came out with fire in the first extratime and nearly won just about two minutes in when Olivia Pearse’s shot hit the left post before the visitors had three more chances in the next minute, including two shots on goal by Ellen Halseth.
The Pride will look to finish the regular season strong at home for a meeting against the the College of Charleston next Sunday at noon.
