Red Bulls II actually won a game Saturday night.
Let’s repeat that: Red Bulls II actually won a game.
New York snapped an eight-game winless streak as it defeated Hartford Athletic, 2-1, before 803 spectators at MSU Soccer Park in Montclair, N.J. Red Bulls II had been 0-7-1 during that stretch.
Midfielder Jake Lacava scored early and forward Serge Ngoma added a late goal in the USL Championship match.
Goalkeeper Luca Lewis recorded the team’s first clean sheet of the season.
The win raised Red Bulls II (16 points) record to 4-13-6, while Hartford (27) dropped to 8-9-3. It was Red Bulls’ first win in almost two months. The team last won July 7, a 3-2 victory at the Charlotte Independence.
Red Bulls II grabbed the lead in the 12th minute, when forward Omar Sowe laid off a pass for Lacava, who placed a shot in the bottom left corner. Lacaca’s fifth goal matched his total from last season.
Two minutes into second-half stoppage time, Ngoma, who entered the match in the 62nd minute, grabbed possession of the ball off of a Hartford defender and scored to double the hosts’ lead. It was his second goal of the season.
