He hasn’t been playing for a month and yet defender Joe Scally already has become a fan favorite with Borussia Mönchengladbach.

The Lake Grove, N.Y. native was voted the Bundesliga’s player of the month for August by the team’s supporters.

Scally, a former member of New York City FC, finished first with 55 per cent of the vote, ahead of Yann Sommer (24 percent), Stefan Lainer (12 percent), Lars Stindl (six percent) and Jonas Hofmann (three percent).

The 18-year-old Scally made his competitive debut for the Foals during the first-round DFB-Pokal game against Kaiserslautern. He went to play the full 90 minutes in all three Bundesliga matches.

According to the Borussia Mönchengladbach website, Scally “impressed on each of his appearances, proving his versatility as he featured at both left and right back.”

Scally started at left back against Kaiserslautern and Bayern Munich, keeping speedy wingers such as Jean Zimmer, Leroy Sané and Kingsley Coman in check. After Lainer’s injury, Scally stepped in to replace him at right back against Leverkusen and Union Berlin. Against Union, Scally showcased his attacking instincts, as he came within inches of finding the back of the net in the second half.
