Rochester soccer history buffs certainly will appreciate one entry in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup qualifying round – the Italian American Sport Club Boom.
The IASC captured the 1963 U.S. Amateur Cup title and that team’s success led to the formation of the Rochester Lancers. The Lancers competed in the American Soccer League from 1967-69 and then joined and played in the North American Soccer League from 1970-80.
The team is one of among the 92 teams that have been approved for entry into the qualifying portion of the tournament, it was announced Monday.
A number of the entrants will see action in the first qualifying round, set for Sept. 18-19, with the matchups to be announced by U.S. Soccer Wednesday. The annual tournament, entering its 107th edition, is the only high-profile event in American team sports where amateur sides have the opportunity, should they advance far enough, to face professionals in meaningful national competition.
The last non-Major League Soccer team to win the Open Cup was the Rochester Rhinos, who captured the 1999 title, defeating the Colorado Rapids.
