Don’t expect Lionel Messi to play in Major League Soccer any time soon, if reports are correct.
The Argentine legend is about to sign a five-year deal with Barcelona, even though he will take a significant cut in salary, La Vanguardia newspaper and ESPN reported on Wednesday.
Messi, Barca’s all-time leading goal-scorer, reportedly has agreed to “a significant wage reduction.”
A salary decrease certainly isn’t a surprise because Barcelona has a $1.18 billion debt and it is trying to find way to save money, even with a superstar such as Messi.
Messi ended his 21-year association with the club last month after his contract expired. Translataion: he is free agent.
While winning 10 La Liga and four UEFA Champions titles with Barcelona, the 33-year-old Messi finally won a major international crown Saturday, helping Argentina over host Brazil in the Copa America final.
Messi has tallied 485 goals for the Spanish side in 520 appearances. He found the net 38 times in 47 games in 2020-21, but that was considered a down year for the Argentine.
For Argentina, Messi has recorded 76 goals in 151 matches.
