Midfielder Austin Brummett snapped a 2-2 tie with his first professional goal in the 79th minute to lift Red Bulls II to a 3-2 comeback win over the Charlotte Independence in American Legion Memorial Stadium in Charlotte, N.C. Wednesday night.

Red Bulls II improved to 3-6-3 while the Independence fell to 5-6-0 in the USL Championship.

The visitors opened the scoring in the 14th minute when midfielder Jeremy Rafanello tallied off a pass that was headed in by forward Omar Sowe. All three of Rafanello’s goals this season have come against Charlotte.

Forward Dane Kelly then connected on back-to-back goals in the 19th and 41st minutes to give Charlotte a 2-1 halftime lead.

New York tied the game in the 70th minute as Sowe scored off a feed from midfielder Jake Lacava.

That set up Brummett’s heroics nine minutes later. Midfielder Nico Nee recorded his first professional assist on the goal after entering the match in the 72nd minute.

Rafanello set a new career-high in games played with 10.

Goalkeeper Luca Lewis recorded a season-high four saves.

Midfielder Daniel Edelman wore the captain’s armband for the first time in his career.

Red Bulls II will travel to face Hartford Athletic at Dillon Stadium on Saturday for a 7 p.m. ET kickoff.
