In what will be a blow for the Red Bulls and U.S. men’s national team, center back Aaron Long likely will miss the rest of the Major League Soccer season.

Kristian Dyer of www.MLSMultiplex.com reported the all-star defender also could miss World Cup qualifiers this fall due to a ruptured Achilles tendon. Dyer cited a source in his story.

Long, who suffered the injury in the Red Bulls’ 1-0 loss at the Philadelphia Union Saturday night, is considered one of the best center backs in the league because of his speed and ability to win aerial duels.

In 2018, the 28-year-old Long was named the MLS defender of the year and early MLS Best XI recognition as well.

Since being called up to the USMNT in 2018, Long has made 21 appearances and has been considered as a probably regular on the team.
