Ronny Deila on Taty Castellanos: “I just see big things from him in the future as well.” (Photo courtesy of MLS)
Heber likely won’t be back until June with the knee injury he suffered last year.
So, New York City FC’s depth at striker, especially a natural one, is pretty thin entering Saturday night’s season opener at D.C. United.
Taty Castellanos is expected to start in that spot.
“I think he will be injury free and be very, very important for us,” NYCFC head coach Ronny Deila said during a Thursday conference call. “I’m really satisfied with him. I just see big things from him in the future as well. He will develop more.”
Last season Castellanos led the team with six goals over 14 starts in 1,341 minutes and 22 games.
If Castellanos is not up to the task or gets injured, Deila said that recent signee Brazilian Thiago Andrade was a possibility.
“He also is a guy that can fill that position,” the coach said.
Midfielders Maxi Moralez and Jesus Medina also could fill the role, Deila added.
“We have a clear number one up front,” he said. “I’m very, very comfortable with having the quality of Taty.”
