TOWSON, Md. – The top-seeded Hofstra University women were upset by No. 2 Elon University, 1-0, in the Colonial Athletic Association semifinals at Tiger Field on the campus of Towson University Thursday afternoon.
The Pride (7-1-1), ranked 23rd in the nation, suffered its first loss of the season while Elon improved to 5-3.
Hofstra’s postseason fate for this year’s consolidated NCAA Division I tournament will be determined during the NCAA Division I women’s soccer selection show Monday.
Claire Broderdrop tallied the lone goal in the 78th minute. Elon hit the crossbar twice in a six-minute span in the second half, but on the second occasion, Broderdop slotted home the rebound.
Hofstra held a 16-6 shot advantage in shots, including an 11-4 margin in the second half. The Pride put eight shots on net, limiting Elon to only two.
After both teams struggled to catch a rhythm during the first half, Hofstra opened up the second half with four-straight shots on goal within the first 10 minutes back out on the pitch.
Sophomore Anja Suttner and senior Sabrina Bryan had opportunities for Hofstra in the 83rd minute, but the Elon defense held strong during the remainder of the match.
