QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John’s University women and Providence College battled to a 1-1 Big East draw at Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium Thursday afternoon.

Sophomore midfielder Jessica Garziano found the back of the net for St. John’s, (5-4-2, 2-4-2) tallying her seventh goal on the season and the second during conference action. Redshirt junior Annie Wysong picked up an assist.

Graduate student Jordan Kamp and redshirt sophomore Naya Lipkens split time in net. Kamp made two saves on the afternoon, while Lipkens turned aside five Providence (7-2-2, 5-2-2) shots.

Garziano struck in the 34th minute on the team’s first chance. The sequence began as Wysong sent a long pass up to Garziano just outside the 18-yard box. The sophomore from Melville, N.Y. fired a shot toward the right side. The ball ricocheted off the goal post and into the net.

With nearly 12 minutes gone in the second period, Amber Birchwell netted the equalizer.

Providence outshot the Johnnies, 18-9, and earned eight corners to the Red Storm’s two.

St. John’s complete the home-and-home series with Providence at Belson Stadium Sunday at 2 p.m.
