WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – An 84th-minute goal propelled Fairfield University over the Monmouth University men, 2-1, in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Thursday.
The Hawks took the lead early in the second behind a penalty kick from sophomore Julian Gomez (Fairview, N.J./St. Benedict’s).
Fairfield answered with a penalty kick of its own in the 56th minute.
“I have to give Fairfield credit,” Monmouth head coach Robert McCourt said. “They found a way to win the game. We played some very good soccer for long periods and created some solid scoring opportunities. Unfortunately, we didn’t put those chances and the game away. As a group, we continue to make positive strides. The boys will be disappointed but will learn from it and bounce back.”
Monmouth fell to 1-2-1, 1-2-1 and will wrap the regular season at Niagara University at 2 p.m. Thursday.
