NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. –The Monmouth University men fell to Iona College in extratime in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game Sunday, 2-1.
Junior Liam McGregor (Middletown, N.J./Middletown North) scored for the second straight game, giving Monmouth a 1-0 lead in the 42nd minute.
Just before the end of the first half, McGregor raced towards the net to tip in a low pass from sophomore Griffin Tomas (Seymour, Conn./Seymour).
Iona answered with the equalizer in the 76th minute, and eventually sealed the win in extratime.
Redshirt junior goalkeeper Sean Murray (Fanwood, N.J./Scotch Plains-Fanwood) made six saves in the loss.
Monmouth dropped to 1-1 (1-1 MAAC) on the season, and will return home to face Rider Thursday at 4 p.m.
“We played a great match against a very good Iona team. We created some quality goal-scoring chances to go along with possession for long stretches,” Monmouth head coach Robert McCourt said. With a bit of luck and capitalizing on those chances, we come away with three points. I’m excited to see our team continue to grow.”
