ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Rochester Lancers Friday loaned goalkeeper Matt Perrella to the St. Louis Ambush for the remainder of the Major Arena Soccer League season.
As per league and team policies, no further terms of the agreement were disclosed.
In early February, the Lancers announced they would not play during 2021 indoor season in conjunction with the league’s COVID-19 voluntary opt out policy.
With their home venue, the Dome Arena, being used by the state as a COVID vaccination center well into the season, that left the Lancers without a place to call home. The Lancers decision to not play was joined by the rest of the Eastern Division teams.
“I wish Matt and all the members of our Lancers family that are still playing all the best in the MASL playoffs,” Lancers owner Salvatore “SoccerSam” Fantauzzo said in a statement.
The Ambush begin their playoff push with a two-game series in Kansas City against the Comets March 26 and will return to the Family Arena in St. Louis for the second game March 28. If there is a tie after Game Two, then a 15-minute mini game will be played immediately following to determine who moves on.
“I’m extremely thankful for the opportunity this late in the season for St. Louis to have the faith in me to come in and do a job if I’m called upon,” Perrella said in a statement. “I have tremendous respect for Paolo [Nascimento, the regular goalkeeper] and it’s going to be great to work with and support him and the entire team for this playoff run.”
The Lancers will return for 2022 MASL season and are focused on planning for the 2021 United Women’s Soccer and National Premier Soccer League outdoor seasons.
