ATLANTA — The Red Bulls added yet another loan player Tuesday.
It started when Atlanta United signed defender Andrew Gutman to a three-year contract with an additional option year from Celtic FC.
In a subsequent move, Atlanta then sent the left back to Red Bulls on loan for the duration of the 2021 season in exchange for the club’s natural third round selection in the 2024 MLS SuperDraft and up to $50,000 in 2022 General Allocation Money. if specific performance conditions are reached.
“We’re pleased to have Andrew join us,” Red Bulls head of sport Kevin Thelwell said in a statement. “He has proven that he can play in MLS and has qualities that we think will fit well in our style of play. He is a solid defender, can contribute from wide areas going forward, and has the physical attributes to meet the demands of our system.”
Gutman, 24, signed with Celtic of the Scottish Premiership in January 2019. He later joined FC Cincinnati via loan on Aug. 3, 2019 as he made 29 appearances and 20 starts for the club through the 2020 season.
Born in Hinsdale, Ill., the 6-foot, 170-lb. Gutman starred at Indiana University, scoring 20 goals with 17 assists in 90 appearances for the Hoosiers. He helped the team to consecutive College Cup appearances in 2017 and 2018 and earned the 2018 MAC Hermann Trophy, awarded to the best college soccer player in the country.
“Andrew brings good experience in MLS,” Red head coach Gerhard Struber said. “He is strong on the ball and has good awareness and intelligence going forward, which will help us build our attack and bring good decision making in the final third.”
