QUEENS, N.Y. – After leading the St. John’s University women a 2-0 week, two players have been honored for their efforts.
Jessica Garziano was named the conference’s offensive player of the week, while goalkeeper Naya Lipkens earned a spot on the Big East Weekly Honor Roll, it was announced Monday afternoon by the league office.
Garziano, who was named to the league’s honor roll last week, earned her first conference offensive player of the week accolade after tallying her first career hat-trick Thursday afternoon in a 3-0 win against Sacred Heart University.
On Sunday afternoon, the Melville, N.Y., native converted a penalty kick to lift the Johnnies to a 1-0 victory over the University of Massachusetts. With five goals through three games this season, Garziano leads St. John’s and sits second overall in the conference.
Lipkens, a redshirt sophomore from Bloomfield, Conn., recorded back-to-back shutout victories for the Red Storm last week. Lipkens began her two-game stretch with a pair of saves en route to the Red Storm’s win over Sacred Heart.
On Sunday, Lipkens stopped the Minutewomen’s lone look on goal to pick up her third win in as many games this season. Through three matches, Lipkens has a 0.42 goals-against average.
Garziano, Lipkens and the rest of the Red Storm squad will return to the pitch as the Johnnies open up Big East action against Villanova University at Belson Stadium Thursday at 6 p.m.
