QUEENS, N.Y. – After propelling the St. John’s University women to a season-opening victory against the University at Albany Sunday, Ava Collins was named Big East freshman of the week while Jessica Garziano earned a spot on the conference weekly honor roll.

Collins, a freshman from New Zealand, was sensational in her collegiate debut, scoring once and assisting on two goals. Collins assisted on Garziano’s score in the 19th minute before finding Maia Cabrera in the 37th minute. She capped off her first collegiate contest with a goal in the 86th minute. Collins’ goal resulted from a brilliant individual effort following an UAlbany turnover in its own zone.

Garziano, who finished second on the team in points a season ago (five), recorded a goal and an assist to help the Johnnies’ cruise to a 6-1 victory over UAlbany Sunday afternoon.

Collins, Garziano and the rest of the Red Storm squad will return to action, welcoming Sacred Heart to Belson Stadium for a Thursday 3 p.m. matchup.
