Former Minnesota Kicks goalkeeper Geoff Barnett has passed away.
He died Friday morning in Fort Myers, Fla., of complications from COVID-19.
Barnett was 74.
A member of Arsenal in the old English first division while making 49 appearances over seven seasons, Barnett was an original member of the Kicks in their 196 expansion season in the North American Soccer League.
Barnett guarded the goal 67 times for Minnesota over five seasons from 1976-80.
In the Kicks’ final season in 1981, Barnett directed the team to a 16-10 mark in the club’s final final 26 matches.
“Geoff was a brilliant human being,” former teammate Alan Merrick told the Minneapolis Star-Tribune. “Everyone loved him, because everyone was important to him.”
Barnett is survived his wife Patty and two children, Chelsea and Colin.
