ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Rochester Lancers Friday signed veteran Major Arena Soccer League goalkeeper Matt Perrella for the 2020-21 season.

Perrella, 29, most recently played with Utica City FC during the 2019-20 season after performing for the Harrisburg Heat (2018-19).

As per league and team policies, no further terms of the agreement were disclosed.

“One of the most important positions in the indoor game is having a great GK who is good with their feet,” head coach Doug Miller said in a statement. “The Lancers signing Matt Perrella gives exactly that and I am extremely excited to welcome Matt to the Lancers family. I believe he will be a fan favorite who will excite everyone involved but most importantly make us more competitive.”

As a backup to Andrew Coughlin on Utica last season, the 6-1, 185-lb. Perrella recorded a 5.36 goals-against average over five matches and four starts. He played 257 minutes and 27 seconds. His save percentage was 75.6.

Born and raised in Belleville, N.J., Perrella has played professionally for seven years.

He played four years at Rider University. He then went on to receive his master’s degree in England. When Perrella moved back to the U.S. he spent time with the Carolina Railhawks of the United Soccer League. His other outdoor teams have included the Jacksonville Armada, New Jersey Copa SC, Bethlehem Steel FC, Pittsburgh Riverhounds and Atlantic City FC. Perella also played for the indoor Syracuse Silver Knights in 2014-15.

“I have been a huge fan of Matt Perrella for years,” Lancers owner Salvatore “SoccerSam” Fantauzzo said in a statement. “I think he is one of the best goalkeepers in the MASL and with him joining our team we will have the best ‘bullpen’ of keepers in the league.”

The Lancers return to play plan will be announced soon. Season tickets are available at
