HARRISON, N.J. – Sky Blue FC has signed forward Mikaela Howell to a short-term contract for the remainder of the NWSL Fall Series, the National Women’s Soccer League team announced Friday.

A Basingstoke, England native, Howell excelled at Monroe College in New Rochelle, N.Y. She became the school’s first women’s soccer NJCAA All-American, earning that distinction twice. She eventually became an assistant coach at the school.

“I am extremely grateful for this opportunity and to have the chance to join a talented group of players,” Howell said in a statement. “I would like to thank [head coach] Freya Coombe and her staff for believing that I can add value to the squad. I have enjoyed watching the NWSL grow over the years and am excited to now be part of it on the field.”

In two years with Monroe, Howell scored 43 goals in 26 matches. She still holds school records for most goals scored, most points earned, and most assists in a season.

Before moving stateside, Howell was a member of the English Under-15 and U-17 national teams while playing for Arsenal LFC. After a seven-year stint with the club, Howell played with Chelsea LFC, Birmingham City LFC and Reading WFC. After moving to the United States to attend Monroe College, Howell played for D.C. United women, recording five goals and seven assists.

Sky Blue has two remaining matches in the Fall Series, against the Washington Spirit Saturday and the Chicago Red Stars Oct. 10. Both matches are being played without fans at Montclair State University in Montclair, N.J. due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
