Los Angeles Football Club forward Diego Rossi was voted the Major League Soccer player of the week for the ninth week of the season, it was announced Thursday.
Rossi helped LAFC to a 5-1 home victory over the San Jose Earthquakes Wednesday with two goals for his fifth multi-goal performance of his MLS regular season career, and second this season. With nine regular season goals, Rossi leads the Golden Boot race. LAFC sits in third place in the Western Conference standings with 12 points (3-2-3 overall record).
LAFC took a 1-0 lead in the 21st minute when Rossi buried a shot from the left side of the box to the bottom right corner (watch goal). Rossi then completed his brace to give LAFC a 4-0 lead in the 69th minute when he found a deflected pass in the box and finished with a quick right-footed flick just inside the left corner of the post (watch goal).
LAFC continues action this week Sunday when facing rival LA Galaxy at Dignity Health Sports Park (10:30 p.m. ET, UniMás / TUDN / TSN2).
The MLS player of the week is selected each week of the regular season through both media and fan voting in a process conducted by MLS Communications. A panel of journalists from the North American Soccer Reporters comprises 75 percent of the vote, while a Twitter fan vote represents the remaining 25 percent of voting. NASR consists of members of print, television, radio and online media.
