Alexa Rispoli of Mahopac, N.Y. has been awarded a Patricia Louise Masotto and Brenda Driscoll Scholarship from Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association.

The award is based on success in high school as well as community service.

Rispoli was on the High Honor Roll and received the Scholar/Athlete Award at Mahopac High School while doing advanced course work. She played varsity soccer and lacrosse, captaining the latter, as well as running varsity track during the winter.

She has been a certified referee and assistant referee for the past three years.

In her scholarship essay, Rispoli wrote, “I grew up in the Mahopac Soccer Club, then subsidized my training by working with professional players an hour away from home. A normal high school day would consist of waking up for school, utilizing the 45 minutes between the end of classes and practice to do homework, practicing for a couple of hours at high school, eating dinner in the car to travel upstate for a 2-hour training session, doing more homework and studying on the way back to finally arriving home at 10:30 p.m.”

Rispoli will attend and play soccer at Wagner College.

The scholarship’s namesakes, Masotto and Driscoll, were best friends and top women’s soccer players from Massapequa, N.Y. Eastern New York set up a scholarship in their names after they were killed by a drunk driver in 1985.
