WARWICK, N.Y. – Former U.S. international Eric Wynalda, who was hired as New Amsterdam FC manager Thursday, did not attend his team’s 1-1 draw with the Cosmos at Hudson Sports Complex Sunday night.

Instead, he watched the NISA Independent Cup game from his hotel room because he had strep throat, according to announcers on the Mycujoo.TV stream.

Max Mansfield coached the team in his absence.

Wynalda wasn’t feeling well. As a precaution, Wynalda took a COVID-19 test and it came back negative.

It was not immediately known whether Wynalda will travel with the expansion team later this week when it will meet the Maryland Bobcats FC and FC Baltimore Christos in its final two Independent Cup matches.

New Amsterdam will host the Cosmos in its National Independent Soccer Association fall season opener at the Hudson Sports Complex on Friday, Aug. 21 at 6 p.m.
