HAMTRAMCK, Mich. – A pair of second half goals propelled Midwest United FC to a 3-1 victory over host Detroit City FC, claiming the United Women’s Soccer Stadium Showcase title on Sunday evening.

Stephanie “Stitch” Curry netted the game-winner after the break, her fifth goal of the Showcase at Keyworth Stadium.

The victory cemented Midwest’s reputation as one of the most decorated teams in UWS, adding a Showcase title to their 2017 UWS crown and 2018 Midwest Conference title. United vanced to its third consecutive conference final last season in its third season of existence.

The culmination of a historic weekend at Keyworth Stadium didn’t disappoint, as two early goals excited both sides.

Midwest got the scoring started with a screamer from outside the box in the 9th minute. United’s close-quarters build-up at the top of the box found a ball pushed into space. Macy Hollingsworth made no mistake, and punished a one-timer into the upper 90 for a 1-0 lead.

DCFC answered back quickly, needing only three minutes to send the game level. Le Rouge needed two passes to span the length of the field, landing at captain Sara Huge’s feet. Huge fought off a defender to enter the box and ripped a shot on net, forcing a tempting rebound across the face of goal. Caroline Fleming was waiting on the doorstep to tie the game at 1-1.

Both sides had golden opportunities in the next 10 minutes to pull ahead. Le Rouge nearly put a second on the board in the 21st, as an outswinging corner found two DCFC heads before a comfortable save was made. United had a chance of its own in the 29th minute, as a long range effort pinged off right iron to preserve the draw.

Midwest controlled the run of play for the remainder of the first half, but wouldn’t find paydirt.

Curry broke the deadlock in the 54th minute, pouncing on a ball played over top of the United back line, collecting and rounding the keeper for a 2-1 lead.

United tacked on an insurance goal in the 75th minute as Regan Dalton picked the pocket of a DCFC defender just outside the final third and drove towards the box. Dalton’s weighted through ball found the feet of Marti Corby, who slotted it home for the final goal.
